ASK ABOUT OUR SUPRESSOR CLEANING SERVICE

The ATF and DOJ introduced a major regulatory reform package featuring 34 proposed and final rules that significantly reduce paperwork burdens, loosen National Firearms Act (NFA) travel requirements, and modernize record-keeping for gun owners and licensed dealers.
These recent updates and newly proposed actions are aimed at streamlining compliance:

  • NFA Travel Notifications: A newly proposed rule eliminates the requirement to submit an ATF Form 20 or wait for approval when temporarily transporting registered NFA firearms (like SBRs) across state lines for up to 365 days. [1]
  • Spousal Joint Registration: Married couples can now jointly apply for and possess NFA firearms without needing to form a gun trust. [1, 2]
  • CLEO Notification Elimination: Proposals remove the requirement to forward copies of NFA paperwork to local Chief Law Enforcement Officers (CLEOs). [1]
  • Electronic Record-Keeping & Retention: Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs) are transitioning to fully digitized record-keeping, and the ATF has proposed defined retention periods (e.g., 20 or 30 years) rather than requiring dealers to keep certain transaction records indefinitely. [1, 2]
  • Ammunition Exemptions: The ATF officially exempted SS109/M855 projectiles and projectile cores from “armor-piercing” ammunition restrictions, determining they are intended for sporting purposes. [1]

You can track the progress of these updates, submit public comments, or read the full landmark regulatory package on the official ATF Rules and Regulations portal. [1]
